New parents

Becoming a parent is a major life change. Exhaustion, identity shift, relationship strain, and the sense that you should be coping better than you are are common. Clinical hypnotherapy can help when worry, overwhelm, or low mood persist beyond the first weeks.

About 1 in 5 expecting or new mothers and about 1 in 10 expecting or new fathers in Australia experience perinatal anxiety and/or depression (PANDA and COPE). Baby blues are common and usually short-lived. If symptoms last, affect bonding, or stop you functioning day to day, speak with your GP or maternal child health nurse. Hypnotherapy at Norwest Wellbeing works alongside that care, not instead of it.

Start with parenting anxiety, hypnotherapy for new parents, or parenting overwhelm.

Mothers and breastfeeding-related anxiety

Postnatal depression and postnatal anxiety are distinct but often overlap. COPE notes that postnatal anxiety affects around 1 in 5 Australian women, and mixed mood (anxiety and depression together) is common. Breastfeeding-related anxiety (worry about supply, feeding, or doing it "right") is not a lactation medical problem we diagnose. It is the stress and fear that can sit around feeding.

Rebecca Smith leads women's health and perinatal hypnotherapy. Related pages: postnatal depression, postnatal anxiety, breastfeeding anxiety, and Women's Health. Typical hypnobirthing programmes are not part of this cluster.

If you are not coping, call PANDA on 1300 726 306 or see your GP. Hypnotherapy is safe to discuss while breastfeeding because it is non-pharmacological; any medication questions stay with your doctor.

Fathers

Fathers can experience perinatal depression and anxiety too. Pregnancy Birth and Baby and PANDA report that around 1 in 10 expecting or new dads are affected. Distress in men often shows as irritability, withdrawal, anger, or physical tension rather than tearfulness, so it is easy to miss.

Clinical hypnotherapy can support regulation, sleep stress, and the adjustment to fatherhood while you stay linked to your GP. See paternal postnatal depression and hypnotherapy for new dads.

Children

Children's hypnotherapy at Norwest Wellbeing uses age-appropriate clinical work for anxiety, sleep, ADHD, ARFID, bed wetting, school refusal, fussy eating, and related concerns. Paul Smith leads paediatric hypnotherapy. Bookings for under-16s are made by a parent or guardian. See child sessions and hypnotherapy for children.

Commercial demand in Australia is strongest for hypnotherapy for kids, ADHD, ARFID, and bed wetting. Each has a dedicated hypnotherapy condition page from this hub.

Teens and young adults

Teens often present with exam stress, social anxiety, driving anxiety, social media habits, and screen overuse. Young adults may struggle with leaving home, study, or early work stress. Clinical hypnotherapy can help with the automatic worry and habit loops underneath those presentations.

See teen condition pages from this hub, teen anxiety hypnotherapy, and young adult anxiety hypnotherapy. Adult anxiety and ADHD pages remain available when the person is booking as an adult.

How hypnotherapy helps families

Clinical hypnotherapy works with the automatic patterns (worry loops, body stress responses, ingrained habits) underneath parenting and developmental concerns. Sessions at Norwest Wellbeing combine hypnotherapy with strategic psychotherapy. Initial consultations run up to 90 minutes ($300, including an audio recording of the trance portion); returning sessions are up to 60 minutes ($300).

Hypnotherapy does not replace assessment, medication, or specialist medical care. It is a complementary pathway for people who want structured mind-body support while staying with their GP, paediatrician, or perinatal mental health team.

Getting started

Book via appointments for Norwest (Sydney Hills) or Zoom Australia-wide. Choose the closest concern; if you are unsure, request a free 15-minute callback or phone (02) 8069 9777. Many private health funds offer Extras rebates for clinical hypnotherapy. Check health funds.

Crisis: Norwest Wellbeing is not a crisis service. Call 000 in an emergency, Lifeline 13 11 14, or PANDA 1300 726 306 for perinatal support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is parenting hypnotherapy?

Parenting hypnotherapy is clinical hypnotherapy for the stresses of becoming and being a parent: new-parent overwhelm, perinatal anxiety and depression, children's concerns, teen stress, and young-adult adjustment. It is not a hypnosis audio product and it is not a hypnobirthing programme.

Who is it for: mums, dads, children, or teens?

All of those. New mothers and fathers, including postnatal depression and anxiety and breastfeeding-related anxiety; children (anxiety, sleep, ADHD, ARFID, bed wetting, school refusal); teens; and young adults leaving home. Each concern has its own hypnotherapy condition page.

Is hypnotherapy a replacement for my GP or PANDA?

No. Hypnotherapy at Norwest Wellbeing complements medical and mental health care. If you are not coping, start with your GP or maternal child health nurse. PANDA is 1300 726 306. If you are in immediate danger call 000 or Lifeline 13 11 14.

Do you offer hypnobirthing?

Typical hypnobirthing programmes are not part of this parenting cluster. Pregnancy-related hypnotherapy for anxiety, morning sickness, or postnatal mental health is discussed on the relevant condition pages and on Women's Health.

Can I book online from outside Sydney?

Yes. Alongside in-clinic appointments at Norwest in Sydney's Hills District, we offer Zoom sessions Australia-wide. Online sessions follow the same clinical process as face-to-face care.

How do I book?

Book via the appointments page for an in-clinic session at Norwest or Zoom Australia-wide, or call the clinic. A free consultation is available if you want to check fit before starting. Parents or guardians book for children under 16.
