What is ARFID?
ARFID (avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder) is a pattern of extremely limited eating driven by sensory sensitivity, fear of choking or vomiting, or low interest in food, with consequences for growth, nutrition, or daily life. It is not the same as ordinary fussy eating, though families often start there.
Diagnosis and medical monitoring belong with GPs, paediatricians, and eating-disorder clinicians. Clinical hypnotherapy can complement that work when fear, gagging, or sensory overwhelm sits in the automatic nervous system.

ARFID vs fussy eating
Fussy eating is common and often developmental. ARFID typically involves a much smaller accepted food list, distress at new foods, possible weight or nutrient impact, and sometimes a specific fear (vomiting, choking, texture). If you are unsure, see your GP before assuming it will pass.
When to seek medical care
- Weight loss, poor growth, or nutritional concern
- Fear of vomiting (see also fear of vomiting in kids)
- Mealtimes that dominate family life
Hypnotherapy does not replace dietetic or medical care. Paul Smith leads paediatric hypnotherapy. Parent or guardian books. See child sessions.
Commercial demand for hypnotherapy for ARFID is already converting in Australian ads. That is complementary clinical intent, not a standalone cure claim.
