Emotional Eating Treatment: What Actually Helps

If you have reached the point of searching for emotional eating treatment, you have probably already tried the obvious things: fewer snacks in the house, another diet, "just stop when you are full." When those have not been enough, it helps to understand what treatment actually targets.

This guide walks through the main options available in Australia, where clinical hypnotherapy fits, and what a course with Rebecca Smith at Norwest Wellbeing typically involves.

What treatment actually targets

Effective habit-level work is not only about knowing which foods are "good." The pattern usually includes one or more of:

  • A feeling that starts the eat (stress, boredom, loneliness, winding down)
  • Food that arrives before hunger feels available
  • Guilt afterwards, then the same cue next time
  • Rules that last days, then fail

If the picture includes regular loss-of-control binges, start on the binge eating page. If the picture is weight that returns after you already know what to eat, use weight loss.

Map of approaches in Australia

These are not mutually exclusive.

GP and medical care. First stop if there is a diagnosed eating disorder, medical underweight, or another condition that needs a different primary pathway.

Counselling and CBT. Talking therapies that look at triggers, thoughts, and practical plans. A 2023 review of emotional-eating interventions in adults living with overweight or obesity found that psychological approaches, especially CBT, showed the most promise, with overall evidence still limited.

Diet rules and apps. Useful as a foundation. Rarely sufficient on their own when the cue is a feeling.

Clinical hypnotherapy. Aimed at the automatic loop. See the emotional eating hypnotherapy page.

How hypnotherapy helps

A session with Rebecca Smith starts with a non-judgemental conversation about your actual cues, then guided relaxation and suggestion aimed at those situations. You stay aware throughout.

The practical aim is a quieter automatic pull and a more available alternative when the feeling arrives. It is not a claim that hypnosis rewires the brain on a scan, and it is not a promise that cravings never return.

Related research exists. Kirsch, Montgomery and Sapirstein (1995) found that adding hypnosis to CBT improved outcomes across several problems, with obesity studies standing out at follow-up. That is not an emotional-eating trial. Delestre and colleagues (2022) found hypnosis reduced food impulsivity (disinhibition) in adults with obesity compared with nutrition education alone. That is related eating-behaviour work, not a 75-85% emotional-eating success paper.

Norwest Wellbeing's own reported outcomes sit in a 75-85% range for many people within 2-5 sessions. That figure is clinic-reported, not a research finding. Results vary.

What a course at Norwest involves

Rebecca Smith. Clinic at Baulkham Hills, or Zoom Australia-wide.

  1. Assessment. Cues, what you have already tried, and whether binge eating or weight-loss work is the better page.
  2. Sessions. Most people need 2-5. Later sessions review real situations and adjust the work.
  3. Between sessions. Notice the feeling. Use the response you practised. A personalised audio is available at /hypnosis/emotional-eating.

Who it suits

It suits adults whose eating starts from a feeling rather than hunger, and who can be honest about the pattern.

It does not suit someone who needs eating-disorder medical care, or whose main job is a weight-return loop after they already know what to eat.

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions will I need? Most people need 2-5. You will get a realistic view after the first conversation.

Can I do this on Zoom? Yes. The clinical process is the same. Book in clinic if home is not private.

Will I lose weight? Some people do when the feeling-to-food loop quiets. That is not the promise of this page. Weight goals belong in the conversation, and often on the weight-loss page.
