How to Prepare for Your First Insomnia Hypnotherapy Session

Last updated 20 August 2026. Reviewed by Paul Smith and Rebecca Smith, clinical hypnotherapists at Norwest Wellbeing.

Quick answer: Track your sleep pattern for a week or two, note whether the trouble is falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early, and rule out sleep apnoea with your GP if relevant. Most clients need 2-5 sessions. Results vary.

Step 1: Rule out a physical sleep disorder first, if relevant

If you snore heavily, wake up gasping, or feel excessively sleepy during the day despite spending adequate time in bed, see your GP about a possible sleep study before assuming the issue is purely psychological insomnia. Hypnotherapy is not a substitute for treating a diagnosed sleep disorder like sleep apnoea.

Step 2: Track your sleep pattern for a week or two

A simple note of bedtime, roughly how long it took to fall asleep, any night wakings, and wake time gives your practitioner real information to work with, rather than a vague sense of "I sleep badly."

Step 3: Identify which part of the night is hardest

Trouble falling asleep, waking during the night and struggling to get back to sleep, or waking too early and being unable to return to sleep, these are somewhat different patterns and may need a different emphasis in your session.

Step 4: Notice your thoughts at bedtime and during wakeful periods

Racing thoughts about the day, anxiety about how tomorrow will go without enough sleep, clock-watching and calculating remaining sleep time, these patterns are common and worth being aware of specifically, since addressing this anxiety is often central to the work.

Step 5: Note your current bedtime routine

Screen use before bed, caffeine timing, exercise timing, room environment, a realistic picture (not an idealised one) helps your practitioner understand what's already in place versus what might need adjusting alongside the hypnotherapy.

Quick checklist before you book

  • Physical sleep disorder ruled out with your GP, if relevant symptoms are present
  • A week or two of sleep pattern notes
  • Which part of the night is hardest identified
  • Bedtime thought patterns noticed
  • Current bedtime routine noted honestly
  • Realistic expectations: 2-5 sessions, aiming for meaningful improvement rather than instant perfect sleep

What to expect on the day

There is no need to do anything unusual before your session. The intake conversation and the guided relaxation and suggestion work together generally run under an hour. Sessions are available in clinic at Norwest Wellbeing in Baulkham Hills or via Zoom Australia-wide.

What happens immediately after

Many people feel unusually relaxed straight after the session itself. The real test tends to come over the following nights, and it's normal for sleep improvement to build gradually rather than transform completely after one session.

Between sessions

Keep tracking your sleep pattern loosely and notice whether falling asleep feels less anxious or night wakings feel shorter. Mention this at your next session so your practitioner can adjust the focus of any follow-up work. Some practitioners also teach a self-hypnosis technique to use at home between sessions.

Common questions

Do I need a formal insomnia diagnosis before booking? No. Many clients book based on recognising a persistent pattern themselves.

Will hypnotherapy replace my sleep medication? Do not change any prescribed medication without talking to your GP first. Hypnotherapy can be trialled alongside current medication.

What if my sleep problems are actually about something else, like anxiety? That's common, and worth mentioning during intake since the two often overlap and can be addressed together.

Can I do the session in the evening, close to bedtime? Sessions are generally scheduled at standard clinic hours rather than at night, but the relaxation skills learned apply directly to your own bedtime routine afterward.
