Gut-directed hypnotherapy sessions: week-by-week Manchester protocol
The Manchester-model trials used a 7–12 session gut-focused protocol plus daily home practice. This page describes that research protocol.

The most-cited gut-directed hypnotherapy trials use a Manchester-model course: typically 7–12 weekly sessions over about two to three months, plus daily home practice with a recording. This page describes that research protocol. Clinic format and session count are individual and are explained on the treatment page. They are not the same as the trial schedule.
Key evidence
From Whorwell 1984 onward, published GDH courses share a recognisable shape:
- Assessment and exclusion of red-flag features. See IBS red flags
- Induction and progressive relaxation
- Gut-specific suggestion and imagery (warmth, comfort, regular motility), not stage hypnosis and not psychological excavation
- Self-hypnosis homework, usually about 15–20 minutes a day
- Taper or review sessions in some later protocols
Home-practice adherence is one of the stronger process signals in the literature. The Flik 2014 review treated these protocolised courses as one intervention class.
A first-visit walkthrough of assessment and consent is on your first GDH session. Magazine prep (what to wear, what to ask) stays on how to prepare for a first IBS hypnotherapy session.
Limitations
Trialists chose 7–12 sessions for historical and practical reasons. Head-to-head dose-finding is thin. Digital programmes often compress or unbundle this schedule; they are not the same evidence base. See online and app-delivered GDH.
What we don't know yet
Whether extra sessions after week 7 add durable benefit is not established.
